Frequently asked questions
Dermal fillers are injectable gels made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body that helps to hydrate and add volume to the skin. At Byova, our dermal fillers are used to smooth out wrinkles, fine lines, and creases, as well as to enhance facial contours and restore a more youthful appearance. Our skilled practitioners are trained to assess individual needs and provide customised treatments to achieve natural-looking results. Whether you are looking to plump up your lips, add volume to your cheeks, or soften facial wrinkles, our dermal fillers can help you achieve a refreshed and rejuvenated look. Contact us to schedule a consultation and learn more about how dermal fillers can benefit you.
Dermal fillers work their magic in a two ways, by addressing both volume loss and hydration:
Filling In the Gaps: As we age, our natural production of collagen and elastin (the building blocks of youthful skin) slows down. This leads to a loss of volume in areas like cheeks, temples, and lips, as well as the formation of wrinkles and lines. Dermal fillers, made of hyaluronic acid (HA), act like tiny scaffolds. Once injected, they fill in these gaps, restoring lost volume and smoothing out wrinkles for a more youthful and defined appearance.
Hydration Hero: HA is a superstar when it comes to hydration. It acts like a magnet, attracting and holding onto moisture within the skin. This surge of hydration plumps up the skin, making it appear smoother, tighter, and more radiant. Think of it as giving your skin a dewy, youthful boost from the inside out.
Experience virtually pain-free treatment at Byova. We combine powerful numbing cream with ultra-fine needles, and a gentle technique for a comfortable and stress-free experience.
We can also use local anaesthetic for increased numbness.
Dermal fillers typically involve minimal downtime, allowing you to get back to your daily routine quickly. Immediately after treatment, you might experience some minor swelling, redness, or tenderness at the injection sites. This is usually temporary and resolves within a few hours or days.
To avoid the risk of any complications, please follow the below after care:
Most people will be able to return to normal activities.
For the first 24 hours after being treated, do not apply makeup or have a spray tan and avoid unnecessarily touching your face as this will help to reduce the risk of infection. You can still wash your face as normal with clean hands.
Avoid alcohol for 24-48 hours after being treated to reduce swelling and redness.
Avoid vigorous exercise, sunbathing, extreme temperature (hot and cold) such as saunas/steam baths, and flights for two weeks to reduce prolonged swelling, redness and infection risk.
Do not have Dermal Filler treatment 2-4 weeks before or after a laser treatment or chemical peel, as this can increase swelling and redness.
Do not have facial massages, facial-electro stimulation, dermaroller/microneedling, semi-permanent makeup or microdermabrasion for two weeks after your treatment, and not until your treatment has completely healed. This is to avoid filler migration and swelling.
Some tenderness during and after treatment is normal. You can use painkillers and cold compresses (a clean cloth dipped in cold water, wrung out, applied to the injected area) to help any discomfort. Arnica cream, fresh pineapples/bromelain tablets can reduce bruising and swelling.
If redness, tenderness, itching and swelling continues to worsen after a few days, contact us.
Escalating pain is not normal, and you must contact us for follow up.
Try not to drink any alcohol within 24 hours prior to your appointment or caffeine on the day of your appointment.
Arrive to your appointment without make-up or we can remove it for you.
Do not have Dermal Filler treatment 2-4 weeks before or after a laser treatment or chemical peel, as this can increase swelling and redness.
Effects generally last six months and gradually disappear from the body. If you are treated again at 4 ½ or 9 months after your first treatment, Dermal Fillers can even last up to 18 months.
The location where the filler is injected can influence its longevity. Areas with more movement, like around the lips or mouth, break down the filler faster due to constant muscle activity. Conversely, areas with minimal movement, like the cheeks or temples, may see results last longer.
Byova uses top-of-the-line hyaluronic acid fillers and tailors treatment plans to your specific needs. During your consultation, we can discuss the expected longevity of your chosen filler and recommend a personalised schedule for touch-up treatments to maintain your desired results.
Pregnant and breast-feeding women.
People with an allergy to hyaluronic acid, and a general history of severe allergic reactions. Please discuss with your practitioner.
If you have an active infection, cold sore, acne or inflammation at the site of injection.
If you have a bleeding disorder, such as haemophilia.
If you have had surgery on your face, your anatomy may have been altered.
Some supplements such as Vitamin A, C or E, Ginkgo Biloba, Garlic, fish oils, St. John's Wort or some pain killing medicines such as aspirin, or ibuprofen or bloodthinning medication can increase your risk of bruising.
While dermal fillers are generally safe and effective, it's important to be aware of some potential risks involved. Here's a summary to ensure you make an informed decision:
Possible Side Effects:
Temporary Discomfort: The injection process can cause some minor swelling, redness, tenderness, or bruising, itching and bleeding at the injection sites. These effects are usually temporary and resolve quite quickly or within a few hours or days.
Allergic Reaction: Although rare, allergic reactions to the filler material are possible.
Infection: As with any injection procedure, there's a slight risk of infection. Byova uses strict sterilisation protocols and experienced medical professionals to minimise this risk.
Asymmetry: Uneven placement of the filler can lead to asymmetry in the face. This highlights the importance of choosing a highly skilled and experienced professional for your treatment.
Lump Formation: In rare cases, small bumps or nodules may form at the injection site. These can typically be addressed by massage or additional injections, antibiotics or require the filler to be dissolved.
Extremely rare risks:
Vascular Occlusion: In extremely rare cases, an injection can block a blood vessel. This can lead to a lack of blood flow, and if left untreated, can lead to tissue necrosis in the affected area. Symptoms may include severe pain, blistering, and skin discoloration. It is usually immediately obvious that a vascular occlusion has occured and can be safely reversed with filler dissolving.
Vision changes: This is an exceptionally rare complication, but it's important to be aware of it. Misplaced filler near the eye area can potentially impede blood flow to the retina, leading to vision problems or even blindness. Again, choosing a highly skilled and experienced professional significantly reduces this risk.
In darker skin tones, hyperpigmentation may occur.
